Program Notes: Requiem

Introit and Kyrie from Requiem (1997)

These are the opening two movements of a complete setting of the Latin Requiem Mass, scored for six voices. In its original form, the Requiem comprised the spinal column of Funereal Rites, the 1994 theatre piece written for and commissioned by The Song Company. The Latin movements were extracted and the piano accompaniment excised for this new version, presented to choral conductor Nicholas Routley as a gift on his 60th birthday. Both versions of the work reflect the composer’s background as an organist and cathedral chorister around the time of the Second Vatican Council in the mid-1960s.
